Livigno Local Attractions
The main sights in the Livigno village are the churches and the beautiful panoramic views. You can easily take a short trek into the nearby mountains and admire the grandeur and beauty of the Alpine valley.
The parish church of St. Mary was rebuilt in the 19th century and included many parts of the original structure which dates back to the 15th century. The church has a single nave plan with an octagonal apse. On top of the altar a large 18th century tabernacle can be found.
The Church of San Rocco was founded in Livigno in 1588. It was built on private donated land as an offering to protect the village from plague. Inside, it holds a precious holy water font dating back to the 17th century.
The Caravaggio church in Livigno is also a must see if you are holidaying in the town. Here you can find a variety of outstanding paintings, some of which have been attributed to the famous Italian artist, Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio.
The main river that runs through the Livigno valley is the river Spol. The lush and idyllic river basin zigzags through a series of snowy mountain cliffs as it makes its way to feed the Danube. Along the river you can find a few hotels complete with state of the art facilities.
The duty free shopping in Livigno is also a big attraction to tourists and many people visit the town to take advantage of the cheap shopping provision in the region. There is a wide array of different shops, from supermarkets selling discounted alcohol to stores selling the latest sports equipment or electrical goods. A great number of old stone and wood houses in Livigno have been tastefully converted into luxury fashion boutiques of a quality to rival those found in Milan.
The Scuola Sci Azzura is considered to be an attraction for many sports tourists. It has reputation as a friendly and professional ski school and its exciting and regular ski exhibitions are a must see if you are visiting when one takes place.
The ski facilities in Livigno are excellent and diverse and skiing brings many tourists here for an exciting winter Alpine holiday. There are a great number of ski lifts which bring you to the top of a wide variety of ski runs, providing challenges to skiers of all levels of ability.
In the summer, the Swatch Mottolino Bike Park is a major attraction for mountain biking enthusiasts. Gondolas help provide easy access to the top of the various bike trails which offer many challenges and rewarding views across the valley.
The natural thermal alpine springs in Bormio also attracts many people to the area. It is a historic retreat which has been appreciated by people from as far back as the time of the Roman empire and the springs are believed to have therapeutic qualities.
The Bernina Railway is also another popular tourist attraction in the area close to Livigno. The train line begins in Tirano in Italy and heads up to the Bernina Pass and along the Poschaivo valley before making its way into the Engadin valley in Switzerland and reaching the historic alpine tourist resort of St Moritz.
Along its journey are a plethora of spectacular views of Alpine valleys, glaciers, mountains and forests. You also have the opportunity to disembark at many stops along the way to take a closer look at a variety of picturesque locations. The historical Swiss national park and the Italian Stelvio national park both converge in the Livigno area and many tourists come here to enjoy the diverse array of woodland nature trails and activities.
Livigno provides easy access to the nearby popular Swiss resort of St Moritz, which is known to attract a great many tourists to the region. St Moritz is considered to be the birthplace of Alpine tourism and has twice hosted the Olympic Games.
